This is an exciting time for the energy industry – and for Direct Energy.

Direct Energy is one of North America’s largest competitive energy suppliers of electricity, natural gas and related services.  With approximately 6,000 employees, we are active in upstream production (electricity and natural gas) and downstream delivery.  Direct Energy helps customers effectively manage all of their energy needs.

Our vision is to be the most recommended energy and services provider in North America.  Our people work across North America using their energy expertise to make a difference in our customers’ lives, every day.

Here’s a sampling of life at Direct Energy and our commitment to our employees.

Awards

Our programs and people have won numerous awards for flexibility, diversity, business performance and corporate citizenry on a local, national and global basis.

Benefits

Benefits package vary across our organization. We offer a generous benefits package, including extended health, dental and vision coverage for our people and their dependents, with flex-options and supplemental programs. Our benefits also include life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability and a retirement plan. In addition, our people may be eligible for an annual incentive bonus plan and/or participate in the company share program.

Communications

Communication is an important part of ensuring our people feel a part of our family and have the knowledge and insights to be energy experts. We share the latest news about Direct Energy, our parent company Centrica, and our industry with our people. You name it, we share it – CEO updates, business strategy, financial results, key metrics on health & safety, engagement, net promoter score, product launches, industry news, people celebrations, community outreach events, operational bulletins, employee benefits, discounts, etc. We use many channels to get the message out – team meetings, webcasts, intranet/internet, emails, newsletters, social media, and more. Our commitment is that our people have access to a wide range of information to build their expertise and help them see beyond their own immediate goals.

Corporate Responsibility

Operating responsibly is our priority. Our vision is to be a leader in identifying, managing, and championing corporate responsibility issues – like managing our impact on the environment and helping others do the same, playing a role alongside government and the public to help ensure that vulnerable customers can access the energy they need and manage their energy costs, offering our customers reliable and competitively priced products and services, and by providing an enriching experience for our people by providing competitive compensation and benefits, training and career development opportunities and support for work/life balance initiatives.

We believe we have a responsibility to support the communities in which we live and work. We invest our resources, share our knowledge and volunteer our time to help many charitable and community partners, including causes to better homelessness, fuel poverty, climate change and education. We also support our people in a wide range of their own local charitable initiatives.

By nurturing our responsible culture – one committed to continuous improvement - we’re making our business a better business.

Direct Energy has a diversity and inclusion policy and supports many initiatives such as diversity councils through sponsorship by people throughout the organization.

Employee Assistance Program & Wellness

We’re committed to providing our people with access to support that can help maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes in-house wellness workshops and information, plus access to a 24-hour-a day, 365-days-a-year counselling and advisory service, or Employee Assistance Provider (EAP) for professional help on health, legal, financial and other issues. This service is provided by an external vendor, and is completely voluntary and confidential.

Engagement Survey

Every person has a say. We use an outside service to survey our people confidentially to tell us what they think – how they feel about their job, their team, our company, and more. All survey answers are anonymous. We share the compiled results and use our people’s collective voice to drive company improvement and planning.

Flexibility

We offer a variety of variable pay plans, paid leave plans, telework and remote working options, and even commuter support programs to eligible people. Our efforts to offer flexible work arrangements reflect our commitment to work-life balance, and have won external awards and recognition.

Getting Started

We share a special day with people new to Direct Energy. Our orientation and on-boarding program includes local leadership meet and greet sessions which provide new people with an informal, comfortable way to learn about our company and our culture. For those not able to attend straight away, we also offer online orientation information and energy expertise learning courses – everything you’d want to get started right at your fingertips.

Health, Safety and Environment

Health and safety is our top priority at Direct Energy. We have a team of health and safety professionals and provide ongoing workshops and information sessions to help people be safe and healthy at work – and at home too. We’re committed to meeting and exceeding North American health and safety legislation standards, and we are proud of our safety record, although we never take this for granted.

Hotlines

We help our people in times of community or weather distress. In the event of an emergency that may interrupt our building services, prevent safe transit, or other situations, people can access around-the-clock information through our North America-wide toll-free Emergency Hotline, and we have a series of other resources and information in the event of emergency. This is part of our Business Continuity Plan to ensure people’s safety.

Learning and Development

Our Vision is to build a culture of constant learning. Applying leading practice models, processes and training helps our people develop new skills and knowledge to perform to the best of their ability.

This spirit of constantly leading, and being innovative and creative contributes to personal success, and is the backbone of our strategic competitiveness.

Performance Management

The success of our business depends on our people – their capabilities, skills and engagement. Direct Energy is committed to helping individuals develop to become more effective, recognize their potential and maximize their contribution to their role and our company. We encourage individuals to take responsibility for their development, and be an active partner in performance discussions and reviews. Our performance management program includes merit increases and career planning.

Promotions and Progression

As a growth and performance-driven company, we’re committed to helping our people maximize their potential – through personal and professional learning, growth and development. Many of our job placements are advancements from our people seeking career progression.

Rewards and Recognition

Extraordinary people are achieving great things at Direct Energy. To recognize and reward individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to our success, we have a number of awards programs – enterprise-wide, peer-recognition and divisional awards – each celebrating different aspects of our people’s talents, performance, innovation, caring and more. Our award programs are designed to encourage our teams to be their best by achieving their business objectives while demonstrating our company’s values.
